ESB Networks has revised its operational procedures, allowing customers to now deploy wireless LED reader devices - commonly termed optical pulse sensors - on compatible meters. This non-invasive methodology captures the meter's LED pulse output to deliver near real-time, high-fidelity measurements of net electricity import, enabling precise consumption tracking and validation of interval-based billing data.
Technical Advantages Over Clamp-Based Systems
Optical pulse sensors interface directly with the meter's infrared LED emission, registering each energy pulse (typically corresponding to 1, 10, or 1000 Wh increments depending on meter calibration). This yields sub-minute granularity and eliminates electromagnetic interference inherent in current-transformer clamp sensors, achieving accuracy exceeding 99% under stable conditions.
- Pulse Detection Mechanism: Photodiode array detects modulated LED flashes at wavelengths around 660-940nm, with sampling rates up to 1024Hz for robust signal processing.
- Installation Protocol: Self-adhesive, battery-powered units affix over the LED portal in <30 seconds; no electrical isolation or live conductor contact required.
